Chapter 16
âThat was quite a lot you learned today,â Sebastian said with a mouth full of noodles. We had met up at a beef noodle soup place in Gong Guan. Ming-Yue had returned home after bringing us a gift of boba milk tea with black sugar. It was so good that I made a note to get one every day we were in Taiwan. The black sugar just made it taste that much better.
I had updated Sebastian on what I had learned from Maryâs journal, leaving out the part about Brian showing up unexpectedly.
âI donât know if I could have done what Mary did, even if it was a child of one of my siblings,â I said.
âI donât know. Iâd like to think I would. Kids are precious, especially if theyâre family,â Sebastian said.
Iâd never heard Sebastian say anything so sweet about kids. For a moment I contemplated asking him if he wanted children, but I didnât have the guts. I was glad when Sebastian changed the subject.
âOh, I want to tell you what I found today.â
Sebastian told me that they had walked through the streets of Gong Guan and its neighborhoods. There were multiple universities near NTU, and one of them called Xi Da, had really grabbed his attention. Heâd met others that looked like him and he was so excited. I couldnât help wondering if that meant he might now know how I felt in the States, but I didnât have time to ask him before he started talking about the class heâd just signed up for. He had met a few Fulbright students while touring Xi Da, and they had raved about the language courses there. He figured that since weâd decided we would be staying a bit longer, heâd go ahead and enroll himself into a beginner Chinese class. I had all sorts of feelings about this. First, I was happy that he was glad we were staying longer. Second, I wondered how he could enroll in a structured course without consulting me first? Third, why would he have to consult me to begin with? Fourth, I wished I could have been on the tour with him. And on and on my mind went.
I really needed to focus on what he was sayingâthere was something about class starting next week, and he thought we should spend tomorrow going down the east coast. Then before I knew it, there was silence.
âEarth to Anne. Earth to Anne.â
âOh, sorry . . . I just have so much on my mind. What was it you were saying?â
âDo you want to go on our road trip tomorrow? Itâs during the week, so crowds should be smaller at the tourist locations. If itâs too much . . .â He looked like a schoolboy waiting for his prize. Was I that hard to get?
âYes. Yes. Letâs go on the road trip tomorrow.â
âGreat! Iâll let Ah Yi know. She thought we could drive to Taroko National Park.â
âThat would be fantastic!â Taroko was somewhere I had always wanted to go, and one of the places Mom said Ah Po loved most.
